About Pilates

Pilates is an exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates (1880-1967). This integrated mind-body system was developed specifically to improve muscle tone, flexibility, balance and postural alignment. Pilates is very effective in bringing the body back to balance by strengthening the deep muscles that support our skeletal structure. This 'inside to out' focus means that you are strengthening the deepest layer of muscle first, providing support for greater strength as you develop your practise. You will be surprised how quickly you feel the control return to both your physical and mental awareness.

At Somers Pilates we adhere to the principles of the Pilates Method - Breathing, Centering, Control, Concentration, Flowing movement and Precision.

The Pilates Method is appropriate as a general fitness regime for core stability, strength, balance and endurance. It is also excellent for post surgical rehabilitation, and can be modified for pathologies and pregnancy. Pilates is proven to relieve back pain and by correcting the bodies bio-mechanics and muscle imbalances, works against joint degeneration (a product of age and wear and tear).

Pilates is a gentle but deceptive form of exercise which will have you feeling strong, flexible and in greater control of your physical and mental self - one who moves effortlessly and with grace!
